I have a moving story to share about my children calling me out of a coma after I collapsed in sudden cardiac arrest.
Functional beverage
Brian thinks [functional beverages] matter, but says it's "important to look at the sources of who's recommending them" and trusts "multiple sources" over just marketing.
Physical health
Brian says [physical health] "really matters to me in a much more acute way than before since my cardiac arrest...exercise, what we put into our bodies, and how we treat ourselves all have an effect on our whole health."
Poetry
Brian says [poetry] matters, citing Rumi's 'The Guest House' for teaching mindfulness: "All of my shame and my guilt and regrets...you're a part of my existence. I'm just gonna keep you in your proper space, and not let you overwhelm me."
Resilience
Brian says [resilience] "matters. It's how you respond to failure...the ability to move beyond those, learn from those and keep going with pursuing your goal matters."
Athletic competition
Brian sees [athletic competition] as a standard for young athletes, shaping not just "athletic prowess" but also "the character of the athletes and the way that they conduct themselves off the field."
Fatherhood
Brian says [fatherhood] "matters so much. It's the hardest job and the greatest job in the world." He believes fathers being there has "such a positive influence on people growing up and becoming healthy adults."

Superstition
Brian says [superstition] does not matter: "What I do...watching my favorite football team is not gonna have an effect on the outcome...I take comfort in that...I'm gonna move on with my life and pursue my own success."
I have a moving story to share about my children calling me out of a coma after I collapsed in sudden cardiac arrest.
I am a teacher, lawyer, coach and poet living in Silicon Valley who enjoys sharing great stories with young people. I am grateful to be alive after my sudden cardiac arrest while coaching my swim team in 2021. Following my collapse, I was comatose with a critical prognosis when something unlikely occurred. I have written a children's picture book celebrating what my kids did to wake me out of that life threatening condition. I have been told that it is a story that could "help a lot of people," especially fathers. My story is about more than a medical miracle; it is about the inadequacy that fathers can feel, and the unequivocal love that conquers fear. I am therefore looking for a platform to share this story...to spread confidence and love to parents, especially fathers.
