Data centers and AI are gobbling energy and water; debt adds another worry

A UN University report found global data centers used 448 trillion watt-hours in 2025 — more electricity than all but 10 countries — putting huge strain on grids and emissions (Newser). [P]A separate UN analysis warns AI data centers could consume as much water as 1.3 billion people by 2030, highlighting large environmental costs that are still being undercounted (Futurism). Add macro risk: the Penn Wharton model cautions that if U.S. debt tops 210% of GDP, interest costs could outpace tax capacity and threaten fiscal sustainability (Fortune).
